The Hunger Games / Week 4

4 Jul

Welcome to the Read Along of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Each Monday we will discuss new chapters. If you are interested in participating, check out the schedule here. Happy Reading!

So we enter “The Games.” Part II of the book. And immediately we are thrusted into Katniss’s contemplations of “does he or doesn’t he?” We have all experienced this in one way or another, but never in the context of a life and death strategy, I presume.

Even though Katniss is wondering if Peeta’s declaration of love is pure gameplay, I am not. I don’t care how convincing her argument is that he is just working an angle. She is fooling herself. Not me. Maybe I am just being stubborn by not budging from my romantic stance, because Katniss does have a valid point. I mean, it would be a brilliant move on Peeta’s part, and even the most steadfast of characters could crack in that sort of situation. But the bread! The Bread, People! He put himself in harm’s way in order to give her bread all those years ago. His aim is true. And he is smitten.

And in case anyone needs a reminder of his strong character, then how about this line:

“Only I keep thinking of a way to…to show the Capitol they don’t own me. That I am more than just a piece in their Games,” says Peeta.

“But you’re not,” I say. “None of us are. That’s how the Games work.”

“Okay, but within that framework, there’s still you, there’s still me,” he insists. “Don’t you see?”

This guy cares about character. His word and his integrity are not tools to be bargained with, I suspect. So I will be really interested to see how this plays out in the arena.

Okay, and I am still sticking to this assertion even after we see that he joined up with the Careers. There is definitely game play going on, but I suspect that he is, in some way, doing this for Katniss. Or it will be his way of showing the Capitol that they don’t own him. Just how he is going to do that will be interesting.

That Cornucopia is just cruel. But brilliant, from a gaming standpoint.

And then the FIRE! Fitting, since she is the girl who is/was on fire.

Till next week –

Oh, and I suspect that I am the only person in the world who hasn’t read these books, like, last year.

Nope…I’m just reading them now, based on the suggestion of a friend. I remembered you had written about it and am now following along with your blog. I wish I had done it real time so we could chat more about it. I’m enjoying it, although as my friend said, I’m not sure it’s better than the running man. I guess it remains to be seen!
