November Sightings
3 November 2009
Some fellow book-bloggers have some really cool things going on right now.
First up, The Literate Housewife Review is doing a Neil Gaiman read-along for the month of November in honor of his birthday. I am completely jealous of all who can participate in this. I will be the kid stuck inside on a snow day procrastinating on graduate applications doing her homework while you all have snowball fights, and make igloos that transport you to a world where time and temperature are frozen, and make snow cats that howl at the moon. Luckies.
Anyway, go check it out. It sounds like great fun. And come to think of it – birthday aside – what a perfect month to be reading Gaiman.
And then. And then! Head on over to The Book Lady’s Blog to check out a reading by Audrey
Niffenegger of her new novel Her Fearful Symmetry. This is exclusive content folks! And if you are interested but you have not bought the book yet (like me), you can enter to win a hardcover copy by visiting HFS Facebook sight and following these instructions.
Have fun everyone, and enjoy the view!
The Inherent Value of Pulp
23 July 2009
During my procrastinations today, I came across a really fantastic piece titled The Almighty Word over at if:book. Alex Rose discusses the value of “trashy literature” (my own description) as a means to an end- being that it gets people to read. A really good article that raises some great points: do we elevate the written word to a higher status than other media simply out of seniority status or nostalgia? And is it really harmless that some literature is valued simply because it is being read, not because of its content? Great site, great article: both are extremely relevant in this time of changing definitions of what it is to be a reader, an author, a book versus literature, etc.
Post 4th of July Garage Sale
7 July 2009
I haven’t been reading as much as I would like over the past (long) weekend, what with the Independence Day celebrations and various other sparkly distractions. This is my first day back on the trail, and I get caught up in a garage sale. McSweeney’s is clearing out their attic, and books are available for 3, 5, and 10 dollars. Go expand your personal library!
Enjoying the View
1 July 2009
Sometimes a journey is about taking a moment or two to look at your surroundings. A literary journey can extend beyond the printed page, and often times what is beyond the page can be more influential than the words themselves. The setting, context, scent, the tactile sensations of the pages or buttons (for those of you with Kindles), rain hitting the window in the background, or the sun and the tree above you casting shadows on your page as you read…all of these create our journey as readers. And so I bring you this sighting, titled ANIMAL INDEX by Hiroshi Sasagawa for the folks over at greenergrassdesign:
Oh yes. Those would definitely enhance my experience on this journey.
